Jay and Grandma Tillie -- 1940's

This photo is definitely in The Bronx, and Jay is about 4 or 5, so mid-

1940's...   Look how dressed-up both of them are.  And Tillie's coat, is that not something?  and that old car behind them .. what make/model is it? ...

 Grandma Tillie's Laugh

This would be taken in the 1950's, probably at her apartment in Far Rockaway.  She always had a glass of "grapefruit water", as I called it:  she peeled grapefruit and put in a glass of water and sipped on it.  Never learned English, she spoke Yiddish and read the 'Forward' Jewish newspaper daily, but was not a big talker.  She was always a bit quiet and demure, and easily made to laugh.  She had the funniest high-pitched 'squeak' of a laugh...

 Tillie and Jacob

My dad, Mike's parents, at their wedding, probably early 1900's, ~1910 we think, as they were married here in New York...

 Grandma Tillie

Mid-1950's, about 1955 or so. Not sure where this was taken, perhaps in Far Rockaway ? or maybe before Jay's Bar Mitzvah?  Tillie was my dad's mother. Russian-born, though we also heard Poland, so who knows?  The ship's register she came over on says 'Russia' as country of origin, emigrated here in 1905, with her husband Jacob, who died in his 30's. She had 3 sons, Mike (my dad), Harry and Charlie.  She was diabetic, used insulin, and lived alone in Far Rockaway Brooklyn in the winter, and spent some summers in Lakewood New Jersey, which had a large Jewish population, I don't know how I remember that, except that I knew she went away there for the summers.  She also spent some winters in South Beach, Miami, in one of the art deco hotels - now boutique hotels - when they were apartment dwellings back in mid-20th century.  She always asked me "when are you going to find a girl to marry?"  -  I guess she never picked up on my identity.  Brother Jay seated beside her behind me.  He would be about 10 or 11, me about 5 or 6.

My brother Jay, and I

This photo was taken around the time of my Bar Mitzvah, which would be the winter of 1962, or thereabouts, in our living room at home on Long Island. (I still have my braces on).
We're standing in front of our spinet piano, with the little busts of Mend
elssohn, Brahms & Beethoven on it...

Summer on Long Island, circa 1954

My mom, Anne, and me in our backyard in Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY, 1954 or '55.
If you click on the photo, it enlarges.
You can see I'm holding up a tomato.
We had tomato gardens every year for awhile, and sometimes squash, and one year pumpkins so prolific their vines (and big orange orbs) hung off of neighbors' trees and fences!
We look fairly 'dressed up' in this photo, it must have been a special day, not a casual one, perhaps a gathering of family at the house, which occurred regularly on weekends.

Debut !

I created this blog to share family photos from the various branches of the Goldman - Dix families. Some will date back to the early 1900's, up to the present time.
